چکیده

We present an efficient particle simulation method for the Boltzmann transport equation based on the low-variance deviational simulation Monte Carlo approach to the variable-hard-sphere gas. The proposed method exhibits drastically reduced statistical uncertainty for low-signal problems compared to standard particle methods such as the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. We show that by enforcing mass conservation, accurate simulations can be performed in the transition regime requiring as few as ten particles per cell, enabling efficient simulation of multidimensional problems at arbitrarily small deviation from equilibrium. © 2011 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3558887

Low Variance Particle Simulations of the Boltzmann Transport Equation for the Variable Hard Sphere Collision Model

We present and validate a variance reduced deviational particle method for simulating the Boltzmann transport equation for the variable hard sphere (VHS) collision operator. In comparison with the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, the proposed method is more suitable for simulating transport in regimes where the departure from equilibrium is small, such as dilute gas flows in small-s...

Absence of re-entrant phase transition of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on the simple cubic lattice: Monte Carlo study of the hard- sphere lattice gas

We perform the Monte Carlo simulations of the hard-sphere lattice gas on the simple cubic lattice with nearest neighbour exclusion. The critical activity is estimated, zc = 1.0588± 0.0003. Using a relation between the hard-sphere lattice gas and the antiferromagnetic Ising model in an external magnetic field, we conclude that there is no re-entrant phase transition of the latter on the simple c...

Collision Models in the Hawk DSMC Implementation

This paper presents a series of tests that have been conducted to validate the collision models of the HawkDSMC implementation. These tests cover the hard sphere (HS), variable hard sphere (VHS), and variable soft sphere (VSS) collision models, and the LarsenBorgnakke energy exchange model, for non-reacting gas mixtures. The results show that Hawkobtains the correct results in all cases under c...

Characterization of Carbon Nanotube (CNT) in Adsorption Gas: Monte Carlo and Langevin Dynamic Simulation

Nanostructures have considerably higher surface areas than their bulk counterparts; thereforesurfaces often play important, sometimes even dominant, roles in the nanostructure properties. Thenanocrystalline and nanotubes have low band gaps and high carrier mobility, thus offeringappealing potential as absorption gas. Interaction between methanol molecules and carbonnanotube is investigated usin...

An improved BGK-type collision-term model for Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) methods

The BGK and BGKC (Bhatnagar, Gross, Krook, and Cercignani) collision-term models for the Boltzmann equation are compared to the more rigorous variable-hard-sphere (VHS) collision-term model of Bird. The BGKC model is based on the well-known BGK model but uses an ellipsoidal statistical (ES) distribution instead of a Maxwellian distribution so as to incorporate both viscous effects and heat cond...
